Product Description

“I’ve seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die.”For all the Blade Runner fans around the world, many of whom know the unforgettable monologue and Roy’s last words by heart, comes “Tears in Rain”, a limited edition based on original art by John Alvin, who created the original poster for the 1982 science fiction classic directed by Ridley Scott.

Written by David Peoples, and significantly modified and enhanced by Rutger Hauer, the speech has been described by film critic Mark Rowlands as “perhaps the most moving death soliloquy in cinematic history”, and became one of most memorable and defining moments in Hauer’s career onscreen.

ArtInsights partners with the John Alvin Art Estate to release this image created by Alvin in response to a conversation about his favorite scene in the film. He was a huge fan of Ridley Scott’s vision to incorporate the architecture into the finished movie poster as a major aspect of the film’s aesthetic. He also longed to create an image that gave Roy more visual real estate, and wanted to balance two antiheroic and flawed characters. Neither Rick Deckard nor Roy Batty are purely good or bad, but a complicated messy mix of both.

Beyond the large images of Deckard and Batty, note the detailed design at the center of the image illustrating Deckard dangling from the edge of the building, moments before Batty pulls him to safety, revealing the dying character’s empathy and compassion.

Blade Runner has been celebrated as one of the best and most beloved sci-fi films of all time. “Tears in Rain” is an homage to the tremendous performances by Rutger Hauer as replicant Roy Batty, and of course Harrison Ford, our favorite professional in the Los Angeles Replicant Detection Unit, circa 2019.

With “Tears in Rain”, Blade Runner aficionados can show their appreciation for the traditional illustration of master cinema artist John Alvin, and join the film critics and film historians around the world that consider the original Blade Runner one of the best science fiction films ever made.
