About Craig Skaggs:

Craig Skaggs was born and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. His love of art developed at an early age, drawing from newspaper cartoons, comics, and copying dinosaurs and other animals that inspired him when he saw them in print. He began his art career while still in high school illustration children’s books for a small publisher, then became a full-time freelance artist in 1993, doing commercial art, advertising design, and storyboards for a small ad agency, and illustrations for a publishing company that produced teaching materials for the classroom.

Soon after, he submitted samples and was hand-picked to illustrate Star Wars art for Brown Shoe Company’s lines of shoes. This began a long connection with Lucasfilm through illustration, production design, and fine art. His work soon branched out to creating book covers, as well as toy, display, and production design for over fifty different corporate clients, becoming the lead medical illustrator for the American College of Cardiology and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, and contributing illustrations to children’s books, independent comics, video and role playing games, and creating official convention art, all of which led to becoming an official fine artist for Lucasfilm and Disney.

Although Craig, like all great illustrators, works in a variety of styles, most of his fine art paintings for Lucasfilm and Disney are known for their realism. Though he works primarily with acrylics on canvas, the great attention to detail means his work can at times be confused with digital art. He’s often even asked what software he uses to create his paintings! “My goal”, he says, “is to produce the highest quality of work I can for my fans.”

Craig Skaggs has a degree in commercial art, but he’s never taken a painting class, has no formal education in toy and production design, and has no medical degree, yet he has utilized elements of all those subjects to build a very successful career that has spanned over three decades. With that in mind, he offers this advice to other creatives: “To all you artists out there trying to make it, it’s all about drive, pushing your limits, a willingness to work hard, commitment, and a passion to never stop learning.”
