The Green Lantern is a DC Comics superhero. The Green Lantern is an intergalactic police officer and a member of the Green Lantern Corps, an organization created by the Guardians of the Universe that has established thousands of members distributed throughout the universe, to keep the peace in each space sector. There have been multiple Green Lanterns assigned to the planet Earth.
The weapon of the Green Lantern is his signature power ring, which translates his ideas into green energy using the strength of the hero's willpower. The Green Lantern can fire blasts of green energy, surround himself in a protective shield, fly, and conjure virtually anything with his power ring if he has enough skill and willpower. The power ring needs to be recharged on a daily basis by accessing the ring's power battery, a lantern shaped item that draws its energy from the Central Power Battery on Oa, the home planet of the Guardians of the Universe. While recharging his ring, the Green Lantern will usually say his famous motto: "In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. May all who worship evil's might, beware my power, Green Lantern's light!"
There are approximately 7200 active Green Lanterns throughout the universe. The ones that have been assigned to Earth include Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Kyle Raynor, John Stewart and Guy Gardner. Hal Jordan is the most famous and commonly represented Green Lantern. The current version of the character and mythos were created by John Broome and Gil Kane in 1959.
