Tin-Man-Oz-ArtInsightsThe Tin Man is a fictional character from L. Frank Baum's book The Land of Oz and popularized in film by the 1939 MGM classic The Wizard of Oz. In the film, the Tin Man is portrayed originally by Buddy Ebsen who left the production due to a near fatal allergic reaction to the aluminum dust in the Tin Man's makeup. Ebsen was later replaced by Jack Haley. In the film, the Tin Man is discovered by Dorothy alongside the yellow brick road on her way to see The Wizard. His joints have rusted shut so he is trapped in position until Dorothy is able to oil his joints and free him. The Tin Man then decides to join Dorothy on her adventure so that he could ask The Wizard for a heart as he has none. Through the course of the yellow bricked journey to Oz, he becomes a loyal friend to Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, and Scarecrow. Click here for more information.
